Seismic Characterization of Fractured Reservoirs (2 day course)

An overview of fractured reservoirs will be presented. The fundamental rock physics describing the seismic response of a fractured rock are developed and discussed. Seismic expressions (velocity changes, anisotropy, azimuthal dependencies, etc.) and detection of fractures are reviewed and analyzed in the context of some existing constitutive models. Seismic sensitivity and surface and borehole detectability are analyzed. Case studies will be used to highlight the applicability of seismic and rock physics techniques. You will learn the power and limitations of seismics in delineating fractures and estimating fracture or crack densities.

Topics to be covered:

1)  Fracture characterization
2)  Scale sensitivity
3)  Constitutive models for fractures
4)  Seismic signatures of fractures
5)  Permeability models for fractures
6)  Logging fractured reservoirs
7)  In-situ stress estimation
8) 4D response of fractured reservoirs
